How can she separate everything that we are? If only my shower could wash away the scar of her words…we’re not back together. Why had I said we didn’t have to commit?

I throw jeans and a t-shirt on. Maybe it will be my lucky day that I sell the app. Or maybe not and I’ll be the slacker she thinks I am. She used to believe in me.

I don’t have a personality conducive to office monotony. I have to create, and I will succeed, it just doesn’t happen as fast as getting hired as a secretary. Luckily that’s the perfect job for her.

Are we too different? Does she need stability I can’t offer?

I’d thought it was some kind of sign when I found out she’d waited for me. But that’s not what she’d said. I had waited. She merely said she hadn’t been with anyone. I swallow the lump of reality. My chest hardens.

It doesn’t take much to pack my shit since all we did is fuck all night. All she did. It was deeper for me. How’s that for ironic? I unclench my teeth when my jaw starts hurting.

I’m not enough for her or her parents. Snatching an edge of her pillow, I bring it to my chest and rest my face in it. I’d thought when she bucked her parents’ idea that she had to go to college, she’d understand my need to pursue my dream. Not so.

Staying with her will be the death of me. I love her with all my heart, which is why there’s no way I can pretend anything less.

Setting the key she gave me on the table, next to the donuts, I’ll give both of us the space we deserve. A gentler version of what she did four years ago.

I look around her condo. She’s done well other than the potted plant that’s on its last leg. I check the soil, the way my mom had taught me to do. Dry. I’m surprised she doesn’t have a regimented watering routine.

Retrieving a cup of water from the kitchen, I give the plant a drink and note that her Christmas tree is artificial so it’s fine.

Maybe someday I’ll be able to give her what she needs. I lock her door, ready to pull it shut as I leave but I can’t. My breaths are shallow. I can’t walk away without a fight. New plan.

Heading back inside, I carry my duffle to the bathroom and pull out the slacks and button-up shirt I’d planned on wearing to take her out for a nice dinner. I find Dana’s steamer and ease the wrinkles, then dress for traditional success.

When I can prove my worth, I’ll win her back properly. I stop in the doorway. I could shove the key in my pocket just in case. No. It would destroy me to be kept at arm’s length.

From the local library, I scour the internet, filling out applications for local IT jobs. A few places have the surprising option of bringing a paper application and resume in so I prep those.
